SECOND GRADE INFORMATION
Welcome to Second grade! We are excited to be a partner in your child's education. If you ever have any questions, please free to call or come by and see us. Our conference time is 12:55-1:40.
We have snack from 9:40-10:00. We ask that it be a nutritious snack and quick to eat. Please--no candy. Students may bring their own drink, get water from the fountain or purchase a drink for 25 cents.
The classroom tends to be cool when the air conditioner blows, some students are cold. A sweater would be helpful and can be kept in the locker all year (a light weight sweater or jacket in red, white, or blue with the NAME inside).
Boys must wear belts everyday. Girls must wear belts if their shorts or pants have loops. Girls must wear shorts under jumpers. Boys and girls should always wear tennis shoes even on Church days. Neat hair. No nail polish.
The classroom is open at 7:40 for children to come in and start the morning procedures. If you have to bring your child before 7:40, please send them to the cafeteria where there is supervision. Our class begins promptly at 8:00. ***Children should stay home from school if they have fever or a stomach virus. At the same time it is important that children not miss school. The limit of days a student may miss is 10.
Second graders may buy ice cream as part of their lunch on Wednesday or Friday in the cafeteria for 50 cents. ***No fast food.
Second graders go to Church every Thursday, all First Fridays and Holy Days. Students are required to wear their church uniforms on these days. On Mass days, we go to Church at 7:50. Please feel free to come to Mass and sit with your child.
Reading and Math contracts are started on Monday morning and are due on Friday. They should be finished by Friday. Each child is required to complete 3 math lessons, 3 reading lessons, and one bonus each day. The students have plenty of time to finish their work. Contract work will be sent home the following Monday in a brown plastic folder. Please sign and return the next day.
The discipline plan follows the handbook policy. We use a positive approach while redirecting behavior. The children are aware of the rules and procedures of the classroom. They are reminded often with warning and hand signals. When an infraction has happened, the children are required to sign a behavior book (insures privacy). We also have many rewards (angel cards, points for party, etc.) for compliant, Christian behavior.
Math homework is sent home on Mondays and Wednesdays and will be checked on the following mornings. Also, please practice math facts for at least 15 minutes every other night. Science or Social Study assignments will be given randomly through the year. Spelling words are sent home on Monday. Spelling sentences with any 5 spelling words are due on Wednesday morning. We are trying to teach the children responsibility. A note will be sent home if your child does not have his/her homework the next day.
Read at least 15 minutes every night with your child. A monthly reading list will be sent home to record the books/chapters read. Please turn in at the end of the month. The children will participate in Accelerated Reader. We will begin reading Charlottes' Web together in class.
Spelling test on Friday with dictation of sentences. Bonus words are 1 extra point each. Math drill test are on Friday. Social Studies and Science tests will be posted on the board and a study guide will be sent home in their homework folder.
